Melvin Beederman Book Tour |

Well, I did it...I went a whole month without blogging. It was an interesting experiment. I know...a lot of you were thinking I was just procrastinating. Me?
Earlier this month my publisher sent me and the illustrator of the Melvin Beederman books, Rhode Montijo, on a book tour. This is the second one we've been on. Last year we spent three days in Napa, CA. This time we did a weeks worth of school and library presentations in Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Grand Rapids and then flew to the International Readers Association conference in Toronto. It was great to finally meet my editor Reka Simonsen. I did a little power point presentation at the conference and later went to lunch with Reka and Rhode. That night we went to dinner with more Holt people and about ten invited guests. It was my first experience with being wined and dined, and let me tell you, I think I could get used to it. Fun times.
One of the highlights of the trip was sampling the famous Chicago pizza (we asked the locals for the best place to go) and going to the even-more-famous Super Dawg where they make the best hot dog in the US of A. Until next time...Greg

Hello, World. Looks like there will be a change in the Melvin Book Tour—coming soon to a city near you. Looks like Grand Rapids has been added in place of Detroit. So we'll be hitting Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Grand Rapids. Then it's off to Toronto for the International Reading Association Conference, where I have to—gulp—speak. This will be the first time I get to meet my editor, Reka. We've done four books together so far, which involves hundreds of emails, but meeting face to face will be fun. Now, if only my passport will come in time! Eek! Greg |

An Unpoetic Boy During Poetry Month |
|

If you haven't already heard, April is poetry month. So what's a body to do? Write something that rhymes, of course. Not an easy task for such an unpoetic boy. Let me just say that I did give it the ol' college try...but everything turned out to be about mice who were nice, mouses who lived in houses, and nuns with great buns (that last one was a YA poem). If you want to check out some great poetry, take this unpoetic boy's advice and check out Gregory K's blog. Greg is posting an original poem every day during the month of April. Nice job, Greg. Until next time...the other Greg |

For all you readers and writers out there, check out one of the biggest book festivals around...and it's in my own backyard, well, kind of. It's the LA Times Festival of Books . I won't be going this year as an author, but I'm going to bug my PR person at Holt so that maybe I can next year. Sounds like a good time and a good place for 'ol Melvin Beederman to strut his stuff. Maybe he can put on an exibition on How To Benchpress a Buick. Greg |

I just received my reader's copy of Melvin Beederman book 5, The Fake Cape Caper, which will be out this fall. I'm not sure how to post photos on this blog yet, but as soon as I do, I'll let you take a gander. In this book the Spaz brothers show up to engage in all things sinister and devious. In other news, I will be participating in the Children's Authors Festival this Saturday at Cal State Channel Islands, where I will be one of two children's book authors presenting. The university was once the home of Camarillo State Mental Hospital. This makes sense to me, since all children's book writers have to be a little bit "nuts." Nuts in a good way, of course. If you're in the Ventura County area, stop by this Saturday at the festival. I will be presenting at 10:00 AM, followed by Lisze Bechtold . My presentation will be capped of with an evil laugh contast and reader's theater performed by kids and college students. Greg |

So far, everything I've published is humorous in some form, which got me thinking...what are the things that influence me? What makes me laugh? The following is a partial list: Bologna (it's the funniest lunch meat) Get Smart episodes (would you believe?) Weird Al Yankovic Ellen DeGeneres (pretty much anything she says makes me laugh) Kevin James (he's a male version of Ellen) Steve Martin in All of Me Ghostbusters (favorite line: "Ray, when someone asks if you're a god, you say yes!") The Far Side The Producers (Nathan Lane, Mathew Broderick, and Will Ferrell are hilarious) Okay, that's it for now. Anyone have something to add? Tell me...what makes you laugh? Greg |

Eek is one of my favorite words. It can mean, "Hey, look, there goes a mouse." Or it can mean, "Hey, look, here comes that girl I used to like in high school." But the latest Eek in my life is that I have a 160 page middle grade novel and I can't open the file. Thus the above-mentioned Eek, which is more of a double Eek. Fortunately, I sent a copy to my old writing buddy Priscilla Partridge (I don't mean she's old; I mean she's a former writing buddy) for her comments and I still have the copy. But now I have to retype 160 pages. EEK! What do you think of the new blog? Pretty groovy, eh? Greg |

A New Libarary in Camarillo |
|
Tuesday, 03 April 2007 17:06 |
I was expecting to have the fourth Melvin Beederman book available on April 3rd, but I was at the Camarillo Library grand opening on Saturday (March 30th) and there was Barbara, from Adventures for Kids, selling all of my books, including book four, Terror in Tights. The new library was amazing. It cost a whopping 27 million. The kids section alone was as large as some libraries I've seen. There's a pirate ship inside, along with a forty-foot tall mast and sail. Amazing place...kind of like a very literary Disneyland. I spent the day with some fellow authors, Barbara Beitz, Alexis O'Neill, June Sobel, Carol Heyer, Jody Fickes Shapiro, and a few others. One of the highlights of the day was some real pirates showed up. They strutted around singing songs about grog and wenches, even though one of their number was actually a wench herself! If you're ever in Camarillo, be sure to check out their new library and be prepared to be wowed. Greg |
